What’s Your Guilty Decorating Pleasure?
… Mine are florals. I could throw a pretty flower anywhere to liven up a space. Yellow flowers, white flowers, orange flowers- all sitting pretty in a new vase. If you walk in to my home, I will most likely have a plant friend (alive or faux) on just about every accent shelf or tabletop. Even when I know how I want a space to look, or feel, a good floral seems to finish it off every time. Why? It’s my guilty pleasure of course.. It’s what I result to. Even if there may be “one too many”, I can’t help but think, just one more?
The thing is, when I go to buy flowers I know that I already have a perfectly good amount at home. Yet, I want to buy more. Simply for the fresh feeling, walking into a room of lively, natural accents. Or for a subtle curb appeal. But my weird-overthinking personality knows that I can do better. Usually I have to step back and analyze “does this space really need a plant? Or can I think a little harder for something else that gives the space some character?” 6.5/10 times I’ll salvage for something else.. six and a half.
In the Fall, when the weather starts to get drab, my instincts reach for stems, leaves, mums, and just about anything to bring life back from the rain. It’s restorative for me, and even the times I find myself on a constant cycle of identical-flowers, I weirdly find it imperative?
So as far as decorating goes, if you’re telling yourself “I can’t stop buying pillows!” sure your bank account might suffer, but maybe that comfort is important to you. (Plus who doesn’t love a good pillow?) Just like when I watch the Kardashians on a random Tuesday afternoon, which then spirals in to a three hour binge session. Do I feel good? Not really, no. But it’s satisfying.. just like it is filling every room with a smelly-candle, or maybe your “abundance” of lava lamps.
Do you have a
guilty decorating pleasure? If so, what is it? Are you fighting the urge or embracing it?
