What’s Your Favorite Room In the House?
My family has a saying that we like to call “kitchen time..”
The kitchen in my childhood home was and still is our gathering place. No matter what, we all unintentionally meet there to carry on our conversations and laughter. Kitchen time has been evolving for as long as I can remember… it all started laying on the mat, curled up with my baby blanket as I would gaze at my mom making dinner. There was also a time guests or high school friends would come over, and we would all squeeze our way to a corner or sit on the counter top. The sweetest memory of all though is when my dad, (who came up with the name “kitchen time”) transformed an old door in to a makeshift bench. He placed it directly outside of the pantry door, near the island, all for an extra seat to listen in.
The kitchen is the heart of that home. It’s the first thing you see when you walk in, and the last thing you see when exiting. It’s not huge, but it’s not necessarily small. I would say, it fit our (grown) family just perfectly. Now that we are older and married, there are some weekends when we all have the chance to go back at once. And during those weekends when we all roll in after a day of driving, we slowly make our way towards the kitchen where we proceed to talk for hours.
The kitchen will always be my favorite room in any house. But I think it’s the memories in my parents kitchen that formed this way of thought for me. Home cooked meals, fresh baked cookies, bar stools and counter tops to sit at, it’s a place where everyone can be at once. Kitchens are also where families are bonded. No distractions, no television, no headphones… just a single room where (shockingly) people talk.
What’s your favorite room in the house? What are your fondest memories while being there? Do you too have a sense of love for your kitchen?
“The kitchen really is the castle itself. This is where we spend our happiest moments and where we find the joy of being a family.” -Mario Batali
