The Wednesday Date Night

What a poser!

About three months ago, Sam and I started a little tradition between the two of us that we like to call.. Wednesday date nights. In short, every Wednesday we take a mid week break and prioritize time to ourselves by going out to dinner. It all started with something called “Wine Wednesday” that has now turned in to trying new dinner spots and carrying out long conversations which we always look forward to. Here’s a little more backstory…

Living in our small studio (ish) apartment in Mercer Island for over a year, we found that it could feel a little cooped up from time to time. We saw that a local wine bar near our apartment had a weekly “Wine Wednesday” ritual with live music and mouth watering appetizers (that are basically a full meal). We started increasing the amount of times we went, ordering a glass of wine and helping ourselves to the (what seemed like) five star food. We soon realized how much we would look forward to going out, and how pleasing it was to hit a reset button for the end of the week. So naturally, we decided to carve out this special time and call it Wednesday date night! We’ve hit a numerous amount of places since the first outing.. from sitting over a greasy ole cheeseburger to a more classy take at The Pink Door. What we found that really made the night count however, was feeling like we had a moment to ourselves away from work and out of our own kitchen.

Last week’s date was a new spot for us in Mercer Island called Mioposto, a wood fired pizza joint. (The Spicy Pepperoni with drizzled honey is everything!!) We also got their fresh oysters to start and a beet salad to go along with our pizza. We talked all the details about our new home, and how this would be our last Wednesday date night in Mercer Island, the place that held our two apartments as a couple. As we say goodbye to Mercer Island this week, and all the memories it holds for us, we look forward to the next chapter in our lives. The next chapter that will include new date spots, or even just embracing the dates we have at home..

I decided to dedicate an entire blog post to this because although we’ve been doing it every week for the past few months, I didn’t realize the important difference it had been making in our relationship. Sometimes the best part is just simply getting a text in the middle of the day with the words.. “Wednesday date night?! :)” that make it all that more exciting during a work day. Every week is usually different, or sometimes we’ll go two weeks at the same place, but we always choose something exciting and of course delicious!

I know that this tradition won’t hang on forever (future mini Rice’s…) but I like to embrace the fact that we do something unique, for ourselves every week that involves US and nothing else. Well, food also. This week we’re taking a small break and trading in date night for… unpacking! And more pizza, and quite possibly champagne.. moving calls for celebration of course!
