Genuine, effortless, vintage.. just three words that come to mind when coming across the Instagram page of Kiana Hanaoka (AKA @keeksitsimple). When I had the privilege of interviewing Kiana recently, her bubbly personality and simplistic outlook on life did not come to any surprise. So much in fact, I felt like I knew her in only a matter of minutes (and wanted to be her best friend).
For those of you that don’t know, @keeksitsimple is an Instagram page managed by Kiana, dedicated towards sharing her life alongside adorable pup Indie, and boyfriend, John. Kiana puts forth a gentle reminder that being your true authentic self is more important than any followers, or Instagram likes out there. Her motto? The simpler the better.
“I never force a post if I don’t feel like it. I don’t want to fake something that I’m not feeling just to try and gain more followers.”
I’m not entirely sure how I came across her page from the beginning, maybe it was the shared love of a Cocokind Chlorophyll Mask, unique thrift finds, delicious food, or her desire to reveal her life to the world. Whatever it was, I found that she connected with others in a way that can merely be seen in the world of influencers, and she’s being herself while doing so.
In our interview I got to dive deeper in to Kiana’s Newport Beach state-of-mind, her keys to living simpler, and the one pizza topping we’ve all been missing. I adored her easy going personality when speaking, and can’t wait to see what she’s got up her sleeve next. Scroll on to see photos plus the full interview with Kiana, and be sure to find her over on Instagram, @keeksitsimple.
What led you to start @keeksitsimple? Is there an overall message you try and share with your viewers?
It all started at my previous job. All of my girlfriends were asking me for meal prep ideas and telling me that I should start a blog. They pretty much forced me to start one. I started out sharing everything that I would make on a daily basis. My overall message: the simpler the better. When you eat foods that aren’t processed, you’re going to feel better. I used to eat Taco Bell, McDonalds, etc. practically every day. Some days I wouldn’t wake up until noon and would sleep in because I didn’t feel good. If you keep it as simple as possible, focusing on real whole foods, you’re going to thrive.
Top 5 places to eat in Newport Beach area?
- True Food Kitchen (where I work, but really their food is amazing)
- Ho-Sum Bistro (The Ho-Sum chicken salad is a must– it’s the only thing I get from there!)
- Shunka (our go-to sushi spot)
- Bear Flag Fish Co. (our favorite spot for really good poke/ fish)
- Bandera (mostly for occasions like birthdays, etc.)
Who inspires you?
A lot of people I see on Instagram who are being themselves. You can tell when someone puts something out just to gain followers. People who stick to what they believe in and who they are truly make me want to share the real side of myself.
Tell us about your morning routine.
I wake up then normally drink some sort of green juice or hot water and lemon. My main priority is getting Indie (my dog) out for a walk, whether it’s down to the beach or around the neighborhood. Right after that I workout and make breakfast. Sometimes we like to stop at Daydream Surf Shop for a lavender tea latte or a vanilla oat milk latte (my go-to’s).
You have the best thrift finds- what are the top things you look for when shopping? Is there a secret?
Go every single second you have time. Most days I honestly don’t find anything, other days I only find one thing. Before I share my finds on Instagram I usually wait until I have a bundle of items built up and then I share. For example, I’ve been looking for a nightstand. So, I’ve been manifesting it, shopping every second I can while keeping the nightstand in mind. I have to have something with meaning behind it, practically everything in my home is second hand because I know there’s always a story behind it.
Something you can’t leave the house without..
My phone and Cocokind Matcha Stick.
Your simplicity and outlook on life is so inspiring- what are 3 things you would tell someone trying to declutter their life?
That’s funny because I was just giving some advice to mom about this the other day. I told her: If you haven’t worn something in say, six months- you probably aren’t going to wear it again. Try putting it in a bin in the garage and if you still don’t use it, donate it to someone else in need. Chances are someone else has a greater use for it. I also think that the environment you surround yourself in completely sets the tone. If I was in clutter all day I would always feel stressed. When you’re living in a clean, simple space, you’ll have a clear mind and will be able to focus on what’s important.
Favorite part about living in Newport Beach area?
You’re never bored here. With everything going on (especially right now), if I feel the need to clear my mind, I head out for a walk. The fact alone that I can walk to beach on the sand and have no one else around is amazing. There’s always something to do here whether it’s eating at a new restaurant, going for a hike, or enjoying nature. I love how accessible it all is.
Do you exercise everyday? Favorite workouts?
Not everyday. I’m not strict to where I beat myself up if I don’t get a workout in. I usually aim for 3-5 days a week, depending on how I feel upon waking. If I do end up feeling like it later, I’ll get a walk in, as long as I have some sort of movement. Once I discovered reformative pilates at TRIM, it completely changed my life. Other than that, I do a lot of HIIT/ weight training, or take a spin class.
If you had to cook one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Recipe?
Pizza. A good homemade pizza. We tried this one in San Francisco that had Muenster cheese, giant crispy kale, then finished with a drizzle of honey. It’s the best pizza I’ve ever had. We also just love a good pepperoni with raw bell peppers on top and ranch. I honestly don’t even really like bell peppers, but it adds the best crunch on pizza!
