Do You Go Thrift Shopping?

Photo of woven vintage picnic basket half open with a white blanket folded in. White side table showing in background.

When we first bought our home, my thought process (probably like most) was “get rid of everything and buy all new!” Well, I can say that ship has clearly sailed. Kidding (sort of). But now that we are completely settled, have researched the ins and outs of all the expensive furniture stores, and have a better understanding of “our style” I think the best pieces aren’t necessarily what’s new. The best pieces- in my opinion- are ones with character. Mainly: what represents you and your home. Of course that means a couple “new” pieces in the mix. (Maybe just one Lulu and Georgia rug?) I’ve gone back and forth on dining tables, would this wood match that wood? Is that absurdly priced antique worth it? etc. etc.. I finally just stopped overthinking and told myself: “I’m going to buy what I like and leave it at that!” Which now leads me to this question.. do you go thrift shopping? I never once saw myself as a “thrift shopper.” My patience was slim, I always second guessed myself, and never walked away with anything. So I gave up. Until now..

Last week, Sam and I snagged two side tables at a yard sale near our home. The total: 14 bucks.

I also got a turntable for one dollar, picnic basket, and later that week found a colorful little tee at a vintage shop for $12. What a whirlwind! I’m not saying that thrift shopping is “brand new” for me. Of course I have shopped second hand numerous times before. But for some reason, buying our first home has changed my views on it. I want our home to have that character and ageless definition. Or those beautiful pieces that we feel comfortable in. What I don’t want is to try and keep up with trends that I may be uncertain about in five years. (I’m also not trying to be the next Joanna Gaines).

I’m proud of these newfound pieces because I feel that it took time to get them (and also saved us money). It’s quite a rewarding feeling to know the design decisions you’re making on your own don’t have to fit all the guidelines, or timelines for that matter. I guess really all it took was an affirmation from myself. Trust your gut. If you’re patient enough, only time will tell, and you’ll always make the right decision.
