Did You Have an “Annual Birthday Dessert” as a Kid?

Next week is Sam’s birthday, and he only had one request: homemade pumpkin pie.
The classic kind, nothing fancy, and of course with a side of whipped cream. He’s had the same birthday dessert since he was a little kid. And every year his excitement is equally cheerful. Food is funny this way, it brings back all the memories once created around it. It’s the main reason I fell in love with the kitchen, because it’s so much more than consuming, it’s about celebrating, gathering, and bottling up the special moments.. (He’s just lucky he married a baker!)
When I was a kid, my mom always had a classic cheesecake ready to go, finished off with a giant spoonful of cherry pie filling from the can. It was the birthday dessert all of us siblings had, and although I haven’t had it for years, the flavors are permanently ingrained. Looking back, I never realized that we weren’t big “cake eaters” and I guess Sam wasn’t either!
So it led me to this question, did you have an annual birthday dessert as a kid? I asked it on Instagram a few days back, and these are a few of the answers I got… (I found out my mom carried on the same one from when she was a kid!)
Hayden says… “Dairy Queen ice cream cake. Always a must on my birthday.”
Kyleigh says… “I didn’t have a dessert, but I did have the same birthday meal every year. It was always a Bella Luna charboiled chicken salad with my grandma.”
Chris says… “Pizookie. A cookie bake pretty much with ice cream!”
Angi says… “I didn’t have sweets, just swedish meatballs, my dad always had cherry pie, and Jeff’s (my husband) was, and still is angel food cake.”
Tara says… “I always hated the taste of cake as a kid (definitely not anymore!) so I would have an ice cream cake on my birthday or ice cream sundaes. I definitely feel like we have become more fun and Pinteresty with our kids. Our boys usually have a cake with a theme depending on what they are in to. Last year Grayson had Star Wars, and Cole had an American Ninja Warrior cake. So they have had fun and special theme cakes. Not me growing up… it was ice cream all the way!”
Bryan says… “Chocolate cake and vanilla ice cream (usually German chocolate). Except for my 14th birthday, that was a white cake because my sister got married.”
Debbie says… “I had the same- cheesecake with cherry pie filling!”
Jacquie says… “Cheesecake!!!”
Michelle says… “Cherry cheesecake!”
Kassi says… “Homemade blackberry pie. And my grandma’s crepes as well! I always looked forward to those for breakfast.”
Tiffany says… “Brownies! No icing, no nuts!”
Barbara says… “Angel food cake with berries.”
Thanks for your answers everyone!
Cheesecake was super popular I guess! My dad gets a cheesecake every year too!
That’s so funny! I haven’t had one for my birthday in years, but now I’m craving one again!
